I've used the same idea once in my latest campaign. The players headed up the
various factions competing in the election of the Cinsina king. They did not
know it at the time, but their PCs were about to get into legal hot water that
would take them before the king's justice. Thus, the election results were very
important to their further careers, the king they elected would influence their
fates.
