waertagi
Thanks to Sandy description, I think that the waertagi are the only seafaring nation who doesn't need the open sea ritual. Their dragon ships are like floating tree trunks.

Here is my own theory about the curse of closing:
Zzabur the sorceror supreme killed all the blue
and red vadeli before the dawn, and he managed to
bring back the sun. The first age showed the dangers
that lingered in the world. The early second age saw
the waertagi's defeat and the mainland colonies fell
to the god learners.
Zzabur had two great magics in preparation, one to
forbid sailing (waertagi are immune because they surf
on a wave, they just control the wave) and one to conceal
Brithos from the rest of the world. Such great magics have
secondary effects. When the god learners tried to invade
Brithos, Zzabur had to unleash his magics but he never had
the time to foresee the secondary effect.
The effect are kwnown, everything that was on the sea
surface was wrecked and Brithos was concealed from the world.
When the spell was cast, the red vadeli came back in the
world. When Brithos was concealed (or when all the oceans
were closed) the blue vadeli came back.
When Dormal opened the seas to the navigation, he found
the red vadeli. When someone find the way to old Brithos,
the blue vadeli will be redicovered too.
I like the idea that old Brithos is still inhabited by
brithini so that the vadeli can teach them how to live
without their skin.
Once the blue vadeli are around, things will become
very interesting in the world.
