When people bring out this analogy, I am reminded that in one of Tolkien's manuscripts that were published by his son (I think it's in Morgoth's Ring but I'm not sure), Tolkein actually states that Middle-Earth was round all along and the belief that it was flat during the First Age was a misunderstanding held by the humans.
