I also believe trolls are afraid of the dark. What is scarier than a momma troll? I can't really imagine anything scarier and more likely to eat its young. Not only are momma trolls sort of expected to eat their enlo children, but I bet that to be devoured by one's mother is a rare but not unheard-of punishment for uzko as well.
