Request: would everyone please not use MIME encoding? Jeff Richard's recent message became effectively unreadable - MIME mixed with plain ASCII is the next thing to word salad.

Alcohol: distilled alcohol was apparently in use in India by about 800 CE, and we get the word from Arab alchemists who were using distillation in the 1200s.
