Mystery Cults:
It says in KoS (Jalk's Book, p239) that parts of the adulthood initiation
rites are among the most
closely held secrets of a clan. So it seems to me that even though Orlanth
& Ernalda cults are
widespread and open to all, the individual spin is very occult and
secretive. Using the RW mystery
cults as a pattern seems appropriate, to me.
Vadeli:
Do the descriptions of the Vadeli castes remind anyone else here of the
various Motie types
in "Mote In God's Eye"? The hardworking Browns, the implacable and
unstoppable
warriors (it's been a while since I read Mote, but weren't the warriors red
furred?), the unseen
manipulative rulers (alas, in Mote they were cream colored, not blue). All
we need are a
diminutive brown helper race (do the BV's make frequent use of homunculi?),
and a brown-
hybrid bred for mediation. And a third arm on each, of course!
Primitive Magic:
I have been thinking about this myself, but have yet to come up with any
hard rules. But I
like the color given by making the published magic the reliable and quick
standard, but
allowing people to try to achieve various effects through long and chancy
rituals. What
effects a person knows how to achieve are determined by their general
knowledge. An
Orlanthi could produce minor weather effects, frex; nothing of the scale of
Cloud Call, Rain
or Wind Warp, but a group of them together might call up a small sprinkle or
a soft breeze.
Of course, they would probably use the spells, cause they are tried, tested
and powerful.
