Mike, it's been a LONG time since I looked at Pendragon, but I don't think that's exactly how they work. I don't think you're ever REQUIRED to play by those rolls, but the system rewards you if you do. You still have free will no matter if you blow your Trait roll.

I may be wrong, though.
