heroquests

Howdy gang,

It's good to hear from John Hughes again - nice Far Point Calendar update! Now that Pam and John have put their two cents into the discussion, I suppose I ought to ante up.

In my own humble opinion, we Digesters make too much of a big deal out of the word "Heroquest". Gloranthans are inveterate heroquesters - for what else is an initiation rite, a worship ceremony or even the acquisition of divine magic? IMO, heroquesting is nothing more and nothing less than an exploration of the relation between myth and the individual/society.

In an ideal heroquesting session, I think that not just the characters but the players themselves should have new insight into the myths of their people. When my gang of Ormsthane Vale farmers journey to the Hall of Kero Fin to present themselves to their "grandmother" and seeking aid from her son, I don't necessarily expect that Pam Carlson, David Dunham, Martin Laurie and Dave Pearton are going to have a personally cathartic experience that helps them better understand the vagaries of life in this wacky post-industrial age. I'm not that good of a gamemaster to expect that. I do hope that they (and I) gain a better understanding of the myths of the Orlanthi and what it means to walk in those paths.

Yours truly,

Jeff Richard
