I haven't played Pendragon, but I have played some Vampire and a fair amount of SR. I stopped, in both cases, because I _hated_ the game systems. I liked the worlds, but I couldn't get past the fact that the game mechanics themselves were pissing me off. They do a poor job of modeling reality, and fail to make up for it by getting out of the way and letting me play the game (IMO).
I'm not a total rules-hound. I play and enjoy Tunnels and Trolls, for Urox' sake. I just want a game system that either a) models reality well or b) lets me play. Both would be great, but is unlikely.
You're right, by the way: as a (relatively) crotchety old gamer, I hate the idea of linear-probability difficulty tests assigned by the GM. Even (or especially) when I'm the GM.
(BTW, "old" means 30 (playing RQ since 1981))
