Bay leaves come from bay trees. The (Terran) bayberry is a different plant, a temperate zone shrub with dark little berries growing directly along the branches. The leaves and berries have a pleasant smell. The leaves could be used for strewing on your longhouse floor, I suppose, but the principal use of the bush is making candles or soap from the waxy berries.

Hope this helps.
