Thank you for pointing out what should have been obvious (you Ratslaff, you). Yelmic sundials will have a mirror suspended above the dial, probably with thin wires or string to prevent shadows. The bright spot will point out the time, not a shadow.

Probably, the mirror is cunningly shaped to give the most precise reading possible. Possibly there have to be several mirrors, to avoid any shadows regardless of the noon Sun's position.
