What does a troll mother do to her young to keep them from eating her = best set of cooking utensils? When she is not terrorizing them or = teaching them she makes them play games that will improve their = burgeoning skills.
Troll mothers are very possessive and dominating. Their young are = heavily discouraged from stealing their food. They are not fed regular = meals. This is not considered cruel by trolls. It is thought to be = useful and necessary.
Trolls have long known that motivation is an important factor in = learning. The motivations of troll youth are obvious. Troll elders = capitalize on the voracious appetite of their growing youth. Their = lessons take the form of games in which they will be fed if they are = successful. Here are just a few of the games trollkin play in the = middle of the night;
Johnny's Stalk
The troll young are made to sit in a circle facing inwards. An = individual troll is made to sit in the center of the circle. He is = deprived of his senses both dark and visual. He is given three sling = stones and a small piece of meat which he must not eat. The small piece = of meat is placed directly in front of him.
One of the young trolls from the circle is chosen at random to enter the = circle. He must sneak up to the troll in the center and steal his piece = of meat. The troll in the center must listen for the approach of his = stalker. If he detects the approaching troll he has three chances to = hit him with a thrown sling stone. If he hits him with one he is = allowed to eat his meat and is given another piece. Another round of = play then begins. If the stalking troll manages to sneak up to the = troll in the middle he must then attempt to take the meat undetected. = If he manages this successfully he is allowed to eat the listeners meat. = He is then given another piece which must now defend his food in the = same manner that his predecessor did. Each youth is only allowed to = defend only long enough to get a reasonable meal.
Hide and go Seek.
A large boulder is selected in rocky terrain. A small piece of food = (animal, vegetable or rarely mineral) is placed on the boulder. To = begin with each troll is allotted an equal share of food. A troll = youth is selected at random. The other troll youth go and hide = themselves. When the other troll young are hidden the selected troll =
must try to find them within a specified time. If he is successful at = finding another troll he is given that trolls portion of the food. If = he is unsuccessful that youth keeps his share. If the searching troll =does not discover any of this clan-mates he is not given any of the food = and they all retain their share. In the troll version of the game there = is no running about or making noise. The trolls are to remain hidden.
Caves
This game is for older youths.
Two small caves (holes) are selected about five hundred paces apart. = The troll youths are divided into teams and each team is assigned a = hole. An number of lead slingstones are put in each cave equal to the = number of players on the opposing team. Each team member must attempt = to steal one sling stone from the opposing cave. Each team must defend = the stones in his own cave. Players must divide their efforts between = defending their cave and searching out the cave of the opposing team.
The caves are changed with each game. Neither team knows where the = other teams cave is. Sometimes they are given a general idea if the = distance is great but this is not usually the case. The troll teams = must defend their caves from all directions until they are able to scout = out the other team.
For every sling stone that a player manages to steal a portion of the = other caves food is added to his own. If no stones are captured on = either side all food is forfeit. An hunter elder is present at each = cave to monitor activities. Another roams around freely. If they do = not feel that the efforts made by each team are adequate they will not = reward the players with their game(meat).
The elders present usually use this as an opportunity to scout out =
talented youth for future ventures.

These games are standard for all troll youth not just the hunters. The = elders say that there was a time when only hunters played these games = but, since troll warfare has become characterized by ambush and, since = most troll armies hide themselves during the day, it is necessary for = every troll male to learn these skills. Similar games are played by = adults at festivals.
