Little Brother (Philip Hibbs) :

>So I'm going to have problems getting my divine magic back then, am I?
>Well then, how do you fancy rolling randomly for your spell spirits, eh?
>Hmmm, Block Pagan looks like an interesting spell...

Git. Don't wory, I've already got it covered. Basicaly you just have to make decent Ceremony rolls at apropriate local temples and shrines to serious dude death gods.

The fact is historicaly pagans were much more open and tolerant about religion than people now. The 'One true god' ethos is a product of monotheism. It has it's place in the west, but Arkat demonstrated that paganism is much more pragmatic.

Sandy petersen :

> Heathen travelers would actually figure out which gods in the new land
>were the "same" as in their old one, so that Thoth (I think) was
>considered to be Hermes by the Greeks.

That's actualy the example I had in mind. I've been reading about the history of the Atlantis story, which Solon got from the priests of Thoth, with whom he felt a great affinity.

>This process takes place in Glorantha, too, though it is often mis-viewed
>as God-Learnerism.

Lots of things are called God learnerism, in common parlance on the list, that have nothing to do with the God Learners at all. I suppose this is true on Glorantha to an extent as well, since most Gloranthans will have even less of an idea of what they got up to than some of us do.

'Phil is actualy a lot better off that a character in another game of mine. He's from an island near Umathela and worships Hilme - a sun god. Little does he know that Hilme is a GL transplant of a solar cult for experimentation. The cult is actualy cosher, but I've got a few surprises in store for him.

Peter Metcalfe :

>It depends. If the Humakti has a geas against using spears then he might
>not be able to participate in the services. I'm leery about Humakti
>going to Vangono in general as Vangono is a fire god (ie spits fire,
>burning spears etc) rather than a death god. If he can worship Vangono
>successfully, then what's to stop him from having a Brainwave and joining
>the Temple of Zorak Zoran?

You mean like Arkat? Ok, so Arkat is an extreme example.

>Or is it your position that he can only learn or refresh spells that are
>appropiate to the aspect he has originally learned?

I imagine that worshiping at a foreign temple would require either that you recoginse each other as being allied in some way (like an associate cult), or that you be initiated into the cult. Depending on how at home you felt, you may or may not be happy to do this. In the former case, I'd say you would only be able to re-sacrifice for divine magic held in common by the two cults and would have to make a ceremony roll each time. In the latter case you are a full initiate, so you get all the benefits.

>Or if he does learn some unhumakti spells at the Vangono Temple like
>Firespear then his old runespells will become one use?

I imagine rune spells that the new cult does not give would not be renewable. Game mechanicaly I might allow it on a critical ceremony roll, in which case something unusual has happened, perhaps a rare magical event, or a revelation opening the way for a heroquest.
