This is the best suggestion so far. It also emphasizes the alienness of teh aldryami and their plant culture. Imagine the surprise of the humans seeing the elf warriors unwinding their green sashes, straightening them out and suddenly forming a hedge of spears!

And spears do have a number of advantages over swords: they are a _lot_ cheaper to produce, and they give you a little more reach, certainly an asset for a puny elf.
