Philip Hibbs admits to being Associated with the Malign Computer Rune:

There seems to have been a mini-epidemic of this recently. I'm not sure exactly what causes it, but it seems to be some mailer between the unfortunate poster and the list server deciding that it doesn't like the length of their lines, and deciding to get Procrustean about it. To avoid this, I can only suggest either identifying the stage of mail delivery that does this, and avoiding it, or more straightforwardly, just making sure outgoing messages have lines no longer than whatever makes the particular mailer puke -- about 75 characters seems a popular threshold.

Computerishly,
Alex.
