Reading this, I came to think of the "King (/Hero) Below the Mountain" myth common in European mythology, e.g. Arthur/Artus, Barbarossa, Holger Danske, and others (e.g. Roland in Moorcock's Elric), ready to emerge when the need is high and the time (and other conditions) is right.
