In reply to Stephen Martin's question, my copy of THE CONCISE OXFORD DICTIONARY OF ENGLISH ETYMOLOGY says that the 'were' element in the word

"is doubtful but has been identified with with OLD ENGLISH Wer (= LATIN Vir) 'Man'."
