post-con, review of Enclosure

Hi All -

I have finally (almost) recovered from the pre-con madness, the con exhaustion, and the post-con tourist-dervish-dance. It was a busy time, but we locals got to do all the fun things we never do in our day to day lives. Much thanks to Dave Pearton for his fabulous San Juan Islands kayak trip. I want to know what secret ritual he performed to the orca gods to have them show up so splendidly! The following trip was the marathon day-trip to Mt St Helens. The mountain's devastated face could be seen quite well in the clear, sunny weather. We couldn't figure out if the Nat'l Parks Service choice of the charming "bunker" style for its buildings was for aesthetics (to blend in nicely), or for cost, as they must expect to lose them all in another 30 years or so. Allison Place kept us all informed about every arthropod we encountered in the blasted ash fields. _Every_ arthyopod, and most of he plants, too. We all learned a lot about the recovery - but mostly that you don't want to be anywhere near an erupting volcano of Mt St Helen's sort.

MY REVIEW OF ENCLOSURE: Eight boxes of it are very heavy. (Due to my critical "bargain" roll at Kinko's, we got 70 lb paper for the price of 24 lb paper.) The only place we have to keep them are in my garage, which has a very leaky roof. Buy a copy before it rains - in Seattle! I believe they will soon be available through your local Tales rep and through the Wizard's Attic.
Neil is already mumbling about Enclosure II, and Martin is throwing ideas at us. This time we'll try a title page. And this next issue promises to have lots of sex and violence.

Well.... violence anyway.

On to digesty issues:

Trotsky:
> Personally, I prefer the identification of Tolat with menses; it's
> blood red, it has a period of 28 days,

Interesting point! This is undoubtedly an important women's mystery in lands where Shargash/Tolat is worshipped. Thanks for the insight.

> Admittedly, it's difficult to explain why the Dara Happans call it
Shargash,

*Gasp - sputter-choke* Get thee to an Enclosure! Buy the fanzine and read all about Shargash in stomach churning detail!

> Being fertile for only 3 days or so out of 56 (assuming you're
perfectly
> healthy and well-nourished) is going to have a detrimental effect on
> population growth, I'd have thought.

I don't think so, given that the gestation period is nine months anyway, and a family can only care for a certain number of children at once. Population growth is usually limited by food and resources, not the sheer number of young a female can produce. Reproductive potential is almost ALWAYS greater than the environment can support.

People have a twenty eight day cycle. So do horses. And dolphins have been observed having sex outside of estrus, as part of the social dynamics of the group. Humans are rarely as unique as we think they are!
