Pentan deities

Jane asked about Pentan women's deities.

The basic model for Pent is, of course, Mongolia. There, from the few documentaries I've seen, women and girls do ride and help with the herds, as well as cook and care for the families, and weave, and move the yurts around. They also use pole lassos to great effect.

Anyway, I think Pentan women would worship a horse goddess. I believe Gamara has been mentioned. (Note - this is NOT Gamura, the giant, rocket powered flying turtle of the Japananese monster movie genre. We will have to fit Gamura into Glorantha somewhere, however, because he would make such a great foe for Trantalor...)

For spells and things, Gamara would be roughly equivalent to Eritha,. They may also worship Eritha as a thrall goddess or something, as she looks after the lesser animals (cattle, etc.) THey also probably worship some sort of abstract land spirit - or, more likely, a whole host of little nature spirits that abound everywhere. In short, their religion is likely much like the Praxians - similar lifestyles and all that- - but with a bigger emphasis on the sky and on elemental powers.

The Solar Pentans worship a form of Yelm, called Kargzant, the Sun Horse. Other deities of theirs would be a host of sky spirits, relatives of Kargzant who specialize in other idioms. Keep in mind that the Pentans probably place great importance on the actions of the stars and planets.
(One could argue that the Dara Happans picked all their celestialology up
from a Pentan tribe before the Dawn...)

The Storm Pentans worship West King Wind, I think. This is a form of Orlanth, though they would probably not recognize the deity as worshipped in Sartar (or Pavis). They may also worship the other brothers of WKW, forms of Urox, Humakt, etc. But feel free to put a really alien slant on it all.

Add to all that, the Pentans have had contact with Kralorela, and may have a bit of mysticism and a lot of shamanism thrown in on top of the deistic worship.

Age Classes:

It is reasonable to assume that Pentans worship age classes associated w/ Kargzant, as David Dunham has outlined for the Grazers in Enclosure.
(Plug, plug). One of the most plausible origins of the Grazers was a tribe
of Pentan mercenaries hired and then isolated by the EWF. You might use his Grazer cults for the Pentans. (I believe they are on his website?)

Women warriors among the Pentans could worship any number of female war spirits, though probably not Vinga herself. I imagine many of these spirits would specialize in archery and lance. Women probably hunt or skirmish, but don't participate in heavy fighting.

IMO, Pentans also have a big tradition of individual tabboos and religious restrictions. I believe much of their spiffy magic powers stem from behaving ritually much of the time. It's a stellar thing, you know.

Enjoy -

Pam
