Hi all

+western navies
In a Malkioni society, the farmers do manual work ie farming, crafting, steering vehicles ...
The soldiers do job that may require the use of force, obvious example are fighting, tax collecting, scouting, doing something about crime (besides whistling to make the criminal stop that is <g>) The wizards do the high magic, keep records and so on. The nobles coordinate the other castes.
You have 3 parallel castes, coordinated by a fourth. Not all nobles may give order to any member of the other three castes. And one interesting problem that the Malkioni have to solve is:
- -who names the guild masters (ie the highest members of the farmer caste)

Aboard a ship, you have sailors (farmer caste) and officers. The master helmsman is a farmer.
The master carpenter is a farmer.
The very important master cook is a farmer.

The navigator is a wizard as is the ship's doctor. If the ship is a warship, you have marines who are soldiers. Rowers aboard a war galley may even be soldiers.

The captain and the second officer have to be noble since they coordinate the other castes' members who are aboard the ship. It's a role that a soldier does not have (IMG anyway)

In the Loskalmi navy, the ship captain may be a knight or a young noble.

The caste of the officer in charge of the cargo (subrecargue ,sp?>) depends on the various sects (ie the trader's caste). In the Loskalmi navy, he is a farmer. In Nolos and Pasos he is a noble. Around the Felster Lake, I'll agree with Jose's opinion.

The Brithini have only river boats (mainly ferries and fishing boat). By river, they mean a body of water not affected by tides. (RW example, the tides affect the Orne river beyond Caen (10 km inland))

The question about the castes aboard ships arose with the Jrustreli. Before the Waertagi had a shiping monopoly on the western seas. Naval warfare was limited to raiding boats dropped near the coast by a waertagi dragonship, intercepted (or not) by the defenders' boats (any analogy with dune is voluntary).

Peace
