Using obscure glyphs with no clear pronunciation rules ("eeryone knows how to say that") and then a hiatus of active worship.

Only if you assume that the ur-Yelmalio cult used a phonetic script, and _dared_ to put the god's name into writing. Even in literate religions, many mysteries are kept in very restricted circles. Kill these off or bring them into discredit, and there you are.
