I think ernalda or barntar should have a Warding 1 / bless field option, that does no permanent damage, but gives a nasty shock. A gift perhaps from Lightning Boy or Orlanth.

Maybe the blessing/warding gives herds a nice feiling, and only stings predators, keeping the sheep happy in their current field, reather than going for fresher fodder, and zapping pesky foxes after the lambs.
On the idea that seems popular of shepherds being to wussy (weak) to deserve an Alynx companion. Fending of Broos, Telmori and raiders from the herds is not an easy job, not like plowing fields and sowing grain or having fun hunting. ( ;-P ). Herding is a 24 hour job. I think shepherds should get cool magic, not to mention slings. ;-)
