Dogs in Muslim areas

Oliver asks if Muslims keep dogs even though the Koran considers them unclean -

Yup. The Turks have the Akabash dog, which is big and white and herds sheep. The Afghan hound comes from Afghanistan, the Saluki ranges from Turkey to Arabia, and there are several other types of sighthounds found from Persia to North Africa. All of these dogs are domesticated - they are quite different from the feral dogs that inhabit the same areas, (which look much like dingoes).

When I lived in Arabia, I knew several Muslim families that were very fond of their pet dogs. I would guess that a smaller proportion of Muslim families kept dogs than is common in the west, but there were still dogs hanging about every rural village.
