Peter - Hurrah for the lovely description of hte Teshnan rite! Almost makes one want to visit Teshnos...

Where do 200 pound sows sleep? Why, in the stead with the people, of course! (During the winter, anyway. During the warmer weather they stay outside and forage.) In ToDP campign, the counting on the warmth of pigs kept in the steads is an important part of the winter's economy!

Yes - pigs can be trained to do quite a lot, and they are quite smart. But they lack the pack behaviors and care-giving-males that make dogs such good companions. (Male canids will help care for puppies - a behavior they share only with rodents and primates among mammals.) These behaviors give dogs their instincts that tell them to haul their masters out of burning buildings, go for help, etc.)
