How did Yelmaio get his spear anyway? There must be a good myth here that the Sun County telmplars can use to make their pikes more durable. Did he get his spear from Lodril? Well then perhaps they have a understanding with a giant in the foothills in the north. They harvest his Giantboot trees and perform an appropriate service in return (Battling the forces of darkness, anyone?). This minor quest could result in even stronger pikes. Or the Truespear spell for independent questers (why doesn't Yelmalio give this spell anyway?).
An annual expedition gives the idle professional soldiers vital training and a chance to earn glory and adoration. And its allways prudent to give idle soldiers something to do. Perhaps leading such expeditions are used as tests for potentional Light Sons?
