G'day all,

Sun Dome Tactics

Jean Durupt (see "Sun Dome tactics", vol.5 277) is right on the money here regarding Sun County responses to nomad raids, in particular his observation that, "...this systems only works when there is a strong central government. The Sun Domers dislike anarchy for this reason."

Later on he says,
>During the Solitude of Testing, there was a period of anarchy, I think
>that most of the county paid tribute to the nomads, because no rescue
>army would have come to their help. But the Sun Dome temple never fell to
>the nomads.

Sun County fell under nomad subjugation several times the Solitude of Testing, and even had a number of nomad "Counts" - look at the Light List in SUN COUNTY. Just how "Yelmalio"-like some of these counts really were is debatable, and I suspect that at times, the Sun Dome folk were treated little better than the oasis folk by their nomad overlords. Nevertheless, the one thing the nomad conquerers either never dared (or maybe succeeded) to do was subjugate the great Sun Dome temple itself, and though the priests may have been virtual prisoners within its walls for years at a time, this keep the flame flickering in the hearts of the people during their time of trial.

>Yelmalio does not give true spear because he is not a phalanx god. His
>power is that even during the fiercest snowstorm when the air is filled
>with snow, even during a storm when the sky is filled by black clouds and
>the air is filled by rain, even under the deepest fog, the sky gives
>light and allows the plants to survive and the the humans to see. He
>allows a light source to be seen and to allow a human to see even during
>the darkest nights.

And this is also a rather splendid metaphor of how the Sun Dome folk grimly hung onto their religion and way-of-life through the grimmest times.

Cheers

[XXIX.13-37] There is in the forecourt of knowledge of Rhigos, deplorable city, a statue of Lhankor Mhy standing on a book. Foolish people there think he read with his feet.
