The Praxians stopped their yearly raids on the Orlanthis (in Dragon
Pass), when the Pol Joni tribe was created. The Orlanthis were unable to
kick the nomads out of their lands.
The Telmori stopped to raid when Sartar bought them with land and a job
position as his bodyguards.
When Tarkalor had to fight the Kitori, he knew that his wariors would
have their butt kicked by the trolls. They fight during the night (trolls
don't need to be stupid), and since a troll is heavier and stronger than
a human, he usually wins a one on one fight even during the day. The
Elmali can see during the night, but they like individual combat.
Tarkalor had to import Yelmalio mercenaries from Prax to create a phalanx
able to win his battles.

I agree with Nick that phalanx warfare was invented by either Dexterius
or Urvainus the conqueror.
The Sun Domer invented the pike. Their main enemies are trolls. Trolls
are bigger and have longer arms than humans, so a longer spear was needed
in order to break their charge. They improved the phalanx (their cultural
way of fighting) to meet their needs.
+Sun Dome in Prax
Paolo IMO is wrong when he says that the nomads allowed the Sun Domer to
remain. If they had been able, they would have razed the Sun Dome temple.
Remember that the guardian of the north had to drive back the Bison
Founder. IMO it means that the nomads were rather hostile <g>.
It is only since the reign of Narokoris the wise that the Sun Domer are
among the lesser tribes of Prax, and have drilled line infantry.
