Nothing to do with Glorantha, but Toshiro Mifune died last Wednesday. He was 77. *sob*

Open Seas
our loyal Finn asks:

>penetrate the Closing, how do the other cults and
other-god-than-Dormal-worshipping sailors do it?

They use Open Seas. No one else was going over the seas before Dormal came along. Everyone started doing it after his secrets met them.

Open Seas is a simple Ceremony spell -- _anyone_ can learn it and just about anyone can teach it. It doesn't require membership in the Dormal cult, nor do (most) Dormal priests forbid teaching it to non-members. The Tsankth pirates use Open Seas, as do the boating trolls, and the mostali, etc. etc. No doubt with local variations.

>Pamaltela and the East Isles were as strongly hit as anywhere else,
though the East Islanders, because of their unique >cosmology and magics, seem to have been able to sail within the islands without too much trouble.

The East Islanders were able to go between their islands, but the Closing still had a deleterious effect. Traveling between islands was more difficult than normal, but not impossible. The Closing is called the Doldrums by the islanders and it seemed to have a sort of psychic effect on them -- there was little or no initiative or curiosity displayed about the other islands during this time. The result was that there was little intercourse between the islands. Of course, perhaps the Doldrums effect has nothing to do with the Closing, but it did go away with the first news of Dormal.

Of course, Vormain was totally cut off from the rest of the world during the Closing, a situation which they apparently enjoyed. But with the end of the Closing, Vormain came boiling out of their island like a house afire, and now they are one of the major trouble-makers of eastern Glorantha.

In my educated opinion, the Open Seas ritual is the only way to sail a boat across the ocean in modern Glorantha, and every single ship captain uses it, or a variation of it. Dormal is quite probably the most important hero (as opposed to superhero) that has ever been known -- he has directly blessed the entire world.

>Some people believe that it is against the spirit of the game to play
non human races (to some degree, I'm included, my >Mostali are little more than Tin Men) while others believe that mixing races is legitimate, and think everyone else is over >reacting and not getting the chance to fully enjoy Glorantha ... Anyhow Sandy, you gotta be mad to let a Minotaur in....

I stand by my typical rule of MGF. I believe that non-humans add a brilliant way to probe human psychology, pretensions, and culture. Now, I don't insist that non-humans be PCs in everyone's campaign, but I do believe that campaigns lacking _any_ nonhumans (even as NPCs) are missing a good deal of Glorantha. Personally, I think they make fine NPCs. On the other hand, I wouldn't run a non-human-only campaign. I think you're missing out by not including dwarfs, BTW. A dwarf was the very most fun non-human PC I've ever had in my campaign. He was played as a broken dwarf, recently kicked out onto the surface world -- his ignorance of surface mores & morals is what made him so fun to play with. He kept struggling to learn how to adapt to his new environment, but it never quite "took".

So far no problems from the minotaur. He is terrified that at some point he'll be injured and go berserk. He doesn't want to lose control of himself. He sees himself as the first sorcerer-minotaur. We'll see how far he gets.

>I play that enchanted metals are immune to all non-magical damage!
Anyone else play like this???

I don't. I give enchanted metals _more_ AP normally, but that's all, except for special tidbits, like Gloranthan aluminum doesn't corrode in salt water, and gold is immune to non-chaotic acid, and stuff like that.

I don't know in what order they joined it, but my belief is that all of them were in it before Teelo Norri.

> ---Danfive was a criminal and a initiate of Ikadz the Torture.

Dunno about the Ikadz connection -- I see Danfive Xaron as more of a wild bandit type. He was assigned the most dangerous part of the ritual -- the murder.

> ---Teelo Norri was a mere girl and a initiate of Denegeria (or Arira).

In my opinion, Teelo Norri was literally kidnapped off the street, randomly chosen by lot to be the seventh member of the conspiracy.
