Up Caste Creek without a prophet.

Nick "Game for a Heresy!" Brooke points out the Doctrinal Error of having non-Waertegi sailors in the West (that one had slipped my brain too; is it in one of the RQ3 boxes?), then aids and abets gleefully in any event. What a sport!

A Pilot is _not_ a helmsman, though. The pilot is the chap who comes aboard (typically) at a port or strait, and starts telling everyone what to do to in order to successfully navigate said feature, not merely to do a bit of steering.

I think in some navies (I may be thinking of mediaeval Spain's, and/or Portugal's), the Pilot was also an officer aboard sea-going vessels, and a high-ranking one at that, but the details of that are not currently resident in my brain.

In the RW, retired ship's masters are the preferred pilots, so in Loskalm, they'd pretty much have to be of equal or greater caste. If the Rokari scheme has 'em in different classes, I'd imagine they'd find some excuse to flout this in Nolos and Pasos. (I think they find excuses to flout lots of things in Nolos and Pasos, mind you, at least by Seshnegi standards.)

Nick's other words on the subject are well-chosen, though. And put together in a nice order, too!

Slainte,
Alex.
