There's bound to be lots of these... mythic? haunted? eerie? weird? places (i'm hesitant to call them gates) dotting the landscape.

No doubt they've become associated with heroquests since it's easier to get a heroquest started in such a place.

BTW, check out the two Mythic Places supplements for Ars Magica, if anyone needs some inspiration for otherworldly places like that.
