This may seem an obvious point

When Richard asks about talking to spirits as a way of researching history, I would think yes, they could tell you if they wanted What I am thinking of tho is ghosts
Farang Farosh is a source of info on the EWF, and would have been as a ghost or bound spirit or whatever he was, presumably.
