Mikael Raaterova provided a very nice explanation about the relative strengths of different types of darkness.

Would I be right in concluding that darkness is hiding even in a brigthly lit room with no shadows - it's just not visible. Then if someone switched the light off, it would reappear, though it was always _there_ somehow?

The _dark_ of the night sky is presumably pretty weak darkness. However, this Destrix thing must be emanating much stronger darkness.

So given your explanations, do you think that the darkness of Destrix reaches the Surface World, especially at night when there's no light to be frightened of?
