Hi All,

My players are terrified of Dragonewts. This is for several reasons.

  1. They nearly never encounter them - seven 'encounters' in fourteen years of roleplaying.
  2. The majority of their interactions are mysterious and terrifying, often resulting in section of lost memory, abnormal marks on bodies appearing overnight, strange lights, people vanishing and characters gaining new abilites thanks to these characters. Think Grey abductions, X-Files etc.
  3. My players know nothing about Dragonewts, what they think they know is wrong, I perpetuate the myth.
  4. When the party have thought they have met Dragonewts that they can understand then they soon discover that they were not Dragonewts.

 Some campaign notes.
 The Saga of the Ranhardi.

  1. The Clan settled in Dragon Pass in 1335 ST. Willem the Clan champion, and proud Orlanthi performs the Orlanth and Aroka heroquest. To do so he steals a klanth from a dragonewt and kills it, he then declares the reptile to be Aroka's kin. The Heroquest is a failure, the champions path is interupted by a quester from Dara Happa calling himself Daga. The clan suffers severe drought. The chieftain declares that it is because Willem murdered the Dragonewt. Several seasons later Willem is slain by the dragonewt, who has been reborn. The clan (players) realise that the creature has advanced. They begin to believe that the dragonewt slew Willem to assist the him to develope to his next stage of life, of course Willem does not.
  2. Many years later Sigwulf a Humakti and Kassi a Vingan are travelling north towards Alda Chur carrying messages from their chieftan. At Isle Dangerous they interupt a Dragonewt ceremony. They had been warned that they scaly ones were abroad, hunting humans. Sigwulf foolishly interupts the ceremony and disappears, Kassi flees but not before her red hair turns green and Vinga refuses to listen to her prayers. During the Sacred Time rituals Sigwulf returns to the clan Tula. He had lost an eye, in fact it appeared that he had never owned one. He could remember nothing of the last three seasons. The clan had declared him dead and the Housecarls tried to slay him as an undead, only stopping when their Turn Undead failed.
  3. Several clan members travel to Prax. While in the service of Duke Raus they encounter newtlings, who they insist are dragon spawn and refuse to fight. It is not until forced by clan honour do they make an assualt upon the Five Eyes Temple. All apart from a the youngest brother die. Eloran returns to the clan tula in Sartar, his tales reinforce earlier myths.
  4. Fyfyr an adopted member of the Ranhardi clan encounters an eastern man who has walked across the great wastes searching for the Dragon of the Sun. He claims to be able to talk to dragons. The Pavis branch of the clan initially refuses aid to the strange man. However the easterner uses his magic to summon and drive off a dragon. The clan aid the easterner to enter the Old Sundome and gain great magical knowledge, their only opponent is a solitary dragonewt who does not speak. When they return to Pavis they discover that the Yelmalions have burned down their houses, a great feud begins. The Easterner then convinces the clan warriors to go to the Five Eyes temple, many refuse those that do not are severly beaten by the Newtling with Draconic allies. Dinas the Pavis clan champion disappears and his name does not appear on Humakt's death rolls. The clan vows never to approach, attack or assist a draconic servant again.

 Cheers Simon Bray.
