Where have all the writers gone...

Hello,
to: glorantha_at_chaosium.com

When the digest first began, people who were bursting with ideas were given a forum where they could discuss their pet theories with several hundred other similar minded Gloranthaphiles. Every topic was fairly new and fresh. Great things were said, vague topics were better defined, and Glorantha became a place where most writers could find some virgin subjects to make their own.

Many years and 1000's of issues later, there doesn't seem to be that much "new" material being put forward. Many of the "old-timers" have already explored most of what they want to explore. The increase in the number of fanzines and websites makes it easier than ever to get something published, so many potential digest writers don't put their material here. This includes me.

The digest, with several shining exceptions, has fallen into a state of people asking questions (a great thing to do) and getting vague/esoteric snotty/condescending answers, and the posting of lengthy dissertations on topics like the use of Amerind languages as a good template for Darktongue. I don't read treatises on 4th century Pict spear sharpening and am even less likely to post a response. Many people respond likewise and the digest falls into silence.

Granted, the summertime is often an awkward time. Many Europeans go on extended holidays, students lose their email access for the summer, etc. and the number of active people drops for outside reasons, regardless of the quality of what is published. Then again, virtually nothing "official" has been published for 4 years. Fan support and products has been very impressive, but their market penetration is fairly low. The audience just keeps on shrinking. Conventions are full of few new faces, and even the die hards slowly fade in numbers. The morale of the RQ community is, barring some Hero Wars optimism, pretty low. No new blood.

What can be done? Play games in Glorantha. Start a campaign. Get new people to give it a try. Write scenarios.

Take Care,
