It's funny, but everything Richard described as "you don't have to do this" is the stuff that I don't do with *any* game system -- I didn't use tactical displays in RuneQuest, Pendragon, Star Wars, or Hero Wars (granted, the game I ran at Glorantha-Con didn't really need a tactical display of which debater stood where -- we didn't get into combat). The Hero Wars rules I've seen aren't super detailed, but they do nothing to prevent you from having players take out graph paper and map dungeons, or use miniature figurines. That's up to the GM.
