I'm not sure I subscribe to that point of view. Just 'cause a player has a decent understanding of tactics, doesn't mean his or her character does. It's the adventurer's skills that determine how competent the adventurer is. If you come out with a pithy witty riposte to an NPC that's giving you cheek, it doesn't mean your adventurer has. If your adventurer fails something, he's failed it - even if you could have managed it far better than he or she could have.

Of course, acts of GM may determine that he actually succeeded for the sake of the plot, but that's another story!
