Perhaps, but how does that square up with the converse notion, that the optimal strategy for a higher skill (or higher SP) is to "play safe", and make a series of very small bets? That doesn't sound to me like a "quick kill", by any means.

It obviously is not. But in order to make any sort of even narrative sense, different "rounds" of a contest must represent some sort of passage of time, however subjective or relative.
