The land of a clan is a self-contained economic unit, so you could assume it has a selection of land/soil/rock types appropriate for each of the important agricultural activities. For example:

marsh or river, for reed thatching and baskets; meadow, for hay;
woodland, for timber and fire wood;
rich soil, for crops;
poor soil, for sheep.

I have some RW historical sources that deal with this---I'll post references tomorrow.
