G'day all,

Da Bat

Bat-o-phobic Keith sez:

> I always thought that the amount of stuff and souls that the Crimson Bat had
> to consume and utterly destroy every week was appallingly high . . .

I'm not convinced by the efforts to justify the numbers, either of people or cattle: they would simply be unsustainable logistically and politically over any period of time.

>All this leads me to the conclusion that the Bat must be away for extended
>periods after it is occasionally killed, and is only summoned back in dire
>emergencies. Nobody wants it back, everybody hates it.

As seen in the TotRM Lunar Special, the Bat actually spends much of its time in situ in its silo on the Red Moon, and is only summoned by Moonson in moments of grave emergency and threat to the Empire.

"Holy Def Con 4 Bat-Man, it's the Bat Signal!"

Curtis Taylor said:

>Nonsense. Good Citizens have nothing to fear from the Bat which exists
>only to protect and serve the Empire. After all, the Bat does not need
>to visit the Lunar Heartlands...

Except, as I note in my new Jaxarte story ("Rough Guide to Glamour"), the time when a catastrophic misdirection of orders sent the Glamour Water Ballet on a punitive raid into Skanthiland and the Bat on a goodwill tour to Kostaddi...

Cheers,

MOB
