This doesn't destroy the gold, merely transform it.
In fact, I hereby propose that it transforms it to lead -- but only if eating Sun-metal is a painful process all the way through the system.
I also suspect trolls know the value of gold, and if they feel like trading with outsiders, may save it for that purpose. I'd be surprised if Cragspider didn't collect most of the loot from the Dara Happan armies right after the Dragonkill...
