Vinga, Thunder, stuff.

The very notion makes my eyes water a little...

I gave up this unequal struggle after "East Ralios" and "Orlanthing". ;-)

> OA as written up has Thunder Powers (or rather, looking at the spell

I think that's a crucial distinction, though. "Wind Lords" have wind powers (surprise!), but only Storm Voices have Thunder powers.

> since I can't think of any reason why Thunderous should exclude women

Julian Lord is quite garrulous on this topic, though I gather he's in Paris at the moment, which I understand imples non-Digest-reading.

I won't try to impersonate him, but his usual drift is along the lines of Rain and Thunder as male principles, Impregnating Mother Earth's fields, yadda-yadda. I believe the Hercules cult (though, which one?) is his favoured comparison. You don't have to believe that this is Universally Mythicly True to give some credence to it as an possible Orlanthi social convention, at least.

I'll spare you his somewhat tasteless thesis as to the distinction between Umathi and Orlanthi kingship qualification...

Continuing my earlier theme of Dodgy Pop Lyrics, Dubstar's "St. Swithin's Day" is a fine example of a poetic connection between Maleness and Foul Weather...

Yeah, at least the bare bones of a list of "typical" members and attributes would be very handy. Though I suspect the list is _extremely_ variable; any given story/attribute/(and dare I say) spell might be associated with a Thunder Brother in one clan, as an integral part of Orlanth in another, and completely ignored or unrecognised in a third.

> If she gets one spell from each of them (and all of them together

Well, not as RQ-style Associate magic, which would be a bit too much of a free lunch. I think that it would involve some sort of separate sacrifice/devotion/initiation (pick favoured concept, "just a social thing" or not) to the Thunder Brothers as such, distinct from "normal Vinga stuff".

> Do we have published Thunder Brothers details, or is it time to make some up?

The latter, I feel. Greg has obviously been doing some stuff on this, so if we make some up, then it will hopefully provoke Decisive Retaliation.

Pam C., Jeff's vicar on earth ;-), says:
> "Orlanth the Warrior aspect" - the traditions and magics of the Warriors
> of Orlanth. (Much like "Adventurer aspect" in the old write ups.)

You say "Old OA" as if this were some Late Mediaeval tradition, which had been well and truly Gregged by now -- which as far as I know, it hasn't -- at least in terms of Official Pronouncements. I do have some sympathy with Jeff's queasiness, and I think the "Warrior" title is certainly more appropriate in some contexts (like the collective religion of War Clans, for a start), at least, but to declare "Adenventurous" (rather than "Adventurer") a non-title is something of, if I might be permitted a MOBism, a Naff RetCon.

> If [Vinga] were dropped from Glorantha, little would change.

Apart from the entire nature of gender-division in Orlanthi society, that is.

Slan libh,
Alex.
