Thomas Gottschall:

>Ok. But then what does the average Orlanthi think what god this
>blinding disk is there above ?

Elmal when the Orlanthi are living according to their customs.

Yelm when the Orlanthi are being ruled over by the Lunars.

>And why began the Great Darkness when Yelm was slain ?

It did not! The death of Yelm begat the Storm Age which was the era of greatest joy and freedom that the Cosmos has ever known.

>And of course why did the sun rise when Orlanth came back from the
>Lightbringer's Quest ?

Because the Grand Order (cf KoS p80) had been returned.

Me>> Neither can most Orlanthi. That is why the Elmali get it
>> in the neck. If their traditions remain unchanged, then
>> they are hated by other Orlanthi for being Sun Worshippers
>> and by the Lunars for being barbarians. Their other options
>> are to a) move far away, b) convert to Yelmalio (and gain
>> the support of the Lunars), or c) give up the Elmali ways.

>I think this is far to much. KoS reports Elmal to be a thane of
>Orlanth, the Colymar have a clan dedicated to Elmal, the Enhyl. I
>cannot see why the Orlanthi should hate Elmali given this sources.
>Maybe they regard them as odd and strange but I presume no more
>than any Humakti.

Jesus and his apostles are reported as being Jewish in the Bible. That did not stop medieval christians from being anti-semetic. What counts is _not_ 'what is in the myths', but the current social climate which determines how those myths are interpreted.

Consider: you are storm-worshippers who are brutally oppressed by lowlander Sun worshippers. By identifying yourself more strongly with your storm-worshipping traditions and contrasting them against the solar traditions of the lowlanders, you are in effect demonizing any sun worshippers whether they be your kith and kin or lowlanders.
