But by no means all the published examples of heroquests are like this. Good examples of characters going to the heroplane in order to get neat stuff can be found in Gregs work, such as the Fragment 1634? in TOTRM #7 where the hero goes to hell and fights his way past Maran Gor in order to get a chance at cool treasures from Asrelias Jar, or Eringulf in Enclosure #2 who heroquests to obtain a cool magical weapon (the cursed Vanak Spear). Shamanic heroquests can typically take the form of a visionquest, or can be a trip to contact a specific powerful spirit with the aim of bargaining for its aid/patronage. There are heroquests where you raid the magic realms of your traditional enemies, and attempt to steal their cool stuff (the elf hero Errinorru raiding the dwarves, for example). And there are situations where the heroquest drags you in, rather than you seeking it out, such as when you discover some great wrong that has been performed by heroquesting.
While I'm mentioning shamanic heroquest, can I just put in a big plug for a recent comics mini-series? I recently read 'Muktuk Wolfsbreath, hard-boiled shaman', and recommend it very highly indeed to anyone interested in shamans in RPGs. Some nice looks at what shamans do with themselves, some great plot ideas, and at least one super heroquest. I'd love to track down more work featuring this character.
Cheers
David
