Hi all -

Jane responds:
>> Berenneth worshipped the gods of the Orlanthi. Orlanth's son Vingkot
>> was his father-in-law and king.
>So? Father-in-law, not father. Berenneth was a foreigner, joining Vingkot's
people
>and bringing his own people, gods, horses and red hair with him. Who did he

>worship, before meeting Vingkot and acknowledging that Orlanth was king
over the
>lot of them? Sounds awfully Solar to me!

OK, let's talk a bit about the Orlanthi Storm Age. Until Hantrafal showed the Vingkotlings how to worship the gods, the only way to get things from them was to show up at the gods' place and ask them to do it. Hantrafal was the son of Orlanth who taught men rituals by which the gods could be contracted without physically showing up to their stead.

Now, Berenneth's gods were either dead or too weak to protect him - I think they were early casualties of the Storm Age. So Berenneth didn't bring any gods along with him - only the magic of horsetaming that had been taught to him by Hyalor. Lots of folk whose gods were weak, dead, or useless sought Orlanth's protection - that's one of the big myths of the Storm Age. Other folk showed up with their gods along with them. In some cases, just the god showed up.
