True that those scared off by creative writing wouldn't care about the piece's
length. However, I've gotta say that your description of what you do for MGF tournaments would put me into a tizzy. What can the average hoplite do? I have no idea what I, me, Loren Miller, can do that is better or worse than the average hoplite. I'm reading Last of the Mohicans now and I have no idea what Natty Bumppo can do better or worse than the average hoplite. Yet I'm sure that I could write a hundred word essay about either or both.

One requires that the writer know something about hoplites, the other requires
the writer to be willing to invent something for the game world.

Still, I agree with MOB's point, that the 100 word method is good, and that it should be optional.
