Okay, enough people have posted to convince me that it is, indeed, possible to die horribly in HW if you try hard enough!
And, you've also convinced me that HW *can* operate at various power levels from total tosser up to uberhero, though, as I understand it, the rules, scenarios etc will be skewed towards the upper end of the scale.
Please don't get me wrong folks, I think HW is, by and large, pretty bloody fantastic, and a necessary and welcome step to inject adrenaline directly into the now feebly-beating heart of Glorantha. But I don't think a vigorous debate about the perceived merits and deficiencies of the current draft here in the Digest is ultimately going to do any harm - quite the opposite in fact: some of our comments or suggestions could just make HW a better product in the end. I mean, just about all of us are gonna buy it anyway, right? The other 95% of prospective punters Chaosium hope will buy the game are out there, blissfully unconnected to the Digest and unaware of whatever we might say here. So roll on the comments if you got 'em, I say!
Loren says, of the 3 things better/3 things worse "Rune Metal Jacket"/MGF
character method:
>However, I've gotta say that your description of what you do for MGF
>tournaments would put me into a tizzy. What can the average hoplite do?
No need for a tizz: fortunately, this is all spelled out on the "Rune Metal Jacket" character sheet, creating a sort of hoplite "archetype" which you can build on*.
> I have no idea what I, me, Loren Miller, can do that is better
>or worse than the average hoplite.
You actually want to play *yourself* in the game? Usually people create some sort of native Gloranthan as their character (anyone who's played RMJ will know I'm pretty liberal about this - after all, the Lunar Army does not discriminate by age, sex, race or chaos features). But if you want to be "Loren Miller", mysteriously transported Thomas Covenant-style into the lozenge and pressed-ganged into the Lunar army, I got no problem with that either...
Cheers,
MOB *yes, similarities to an as-yet unpublished rules system frequently discussed here are no doubt entirely coincidental...
