Pete Nash says:

>Wind blows out fire. Water quenches fire. Earth smothers fire.

Not quite the interaction that Greg espouses. Imagine a circle of elements that goes:

       Fire
  Water Dark

    Air Earth

Each element can easily beat the element clockwise from itself (Fire beats Dark beats Earth beats Air beats Water beats Fire).

The Two elements that are not immediately adjacent will contend in some sort of struggle where (barring other considerations) the more abundant material will beat the less abundant.

So Earth and Air will beat Fire only when there is more Earth or Air than Fire. What is "more"? a question for the sages. Obviously, there is more Air in your breath than Fire in a candle, and more Earth in a shovel than a small fire. But a campfire will easily resist you blowing it out (whether you can extinguish it with a shovel full of dirt will determine which is "more").
