All they need is to find a cure for the mob inducing bacillus that the aforesaid Sage has discovered. Hey, how about tricking the mob into malia worship to protect them from the bacillus. Godlearner Sage persuades players of unchaotic but evil nature of Malia and says that two evils can make a good, and introduces them to a beautiful Disease Mistress.
Later....
Huge temple of Malia built with players as High Priest Lords of a despised tyrannical Plague theocracy, protected by diseased mob soldiers, scientific constructs, stinking, infested, swamps and wastelands and dreadful propiatory human sacrifice to the Spirits of the Last Death.
That'll teach them to meddle in science...
