The Closing and the Waertagi

And it is very strange that a curse supposedly to smite humanity for the benefit of sea-creatures happens to thoroughly screw a major race of sea-creatures.

Yes, they do. They didn't worship Wachaza because they feared him. This was a major reason for the God Learner patronage of that demon.

The Waertagi are said in numerous sources to blame Brithos for their treachery. Nobody knows for certain if Brithos's disappearance was an accident or was planned.

I don't think he summoned and bound demons. He already had absolute mastery over them since the end of the Ice Age. He certainly did cast a spell that coerced the spirits of the seas to act as they did.

It could. OTOH Zzabur may have simply drawn the map to scare Snodal into unleashing the Ban so he could take advantage of its magical energies in moving Brithos to the other side. 'tis merely one suggestion that I've heard.
