My impression (from KoS) was that while this very definitely _used_ to be strictly enforced (resulting ultimately in the Taral War, to underline the general point about the potentially short distance between "cite legal precedent" and "hit over head"), this is no longer so in these debauched latter days. Things ain't what they used to be, back in the old days, eh Jeff? I reckon there's still a very large Traditionalist faction that would be appalled if someone married the 'wrong' clan, and _even more appalled than usual!_ if clansfolk married outside the Colymar.

Incidentally, to emphasise the point about how restrictive an arrangement this is, a true 'strict triaty' allows any given person only _one_ clan to choose a spouse from. If you're in the Erkon clan, you can marry a man of the Kilvrin clan if you're female, or a women of the Pwrat clan if you're male, and similarly, _mutatis mutandis_, for the other tribes. Doubtless Orlanthi Consistency means the term is not infrequently used to mean somewhat more laid-back three-clan tribes, too, however. (No Isaac Asimov or Douglas Adams jokes, please! <g>)

Slan,
Alex.
